besides just being the first day of karneval, weiberfastnacht has the special feature of being the day when "women rule". one of the most prominent customs is that women get to go about chopping off any tie hanging from a man's neck! check out what i found taped to the door at mpi when i arrived yesterday -- just like scalps on display!

Dave tells me that there is this restaurant in Colorado where they have all these ties that were cut, tacked on to the ceiling, walls, everywhere. Apparently anyone who unwittingly comes into the restaurant wearing a tie has to face the consequence. Their tie is cut off and it gets displayed.
(I wonder if it is a gimmick!)
The ritual in Bonn sounds better, I think.
