It's a pity you couldn't come up to Chiang Mai to see this live as we went to the same elephant show with Sandya, Joe, Mom & Dad.
The elephants are trained using positive reinforcement (food & treats mostly). Some are very intelligent so can learn complicated things like painting and other stunts.
