Peas In Deutschland

P has moved to Germany! This is a place to share with loved ones the pleasures, frustrations, and photographs of my adventures, leavened by talk of meals eaten and drinks drunk.

karneval in bonn, part 2

one of the most characteristic aspects of karneval is its music. i think it's a bit like christmas -- the same songs get played every year, most are quite simple and easy to sing, many have a high cheese factor, but everyone loves them all the same. in bonn and cologne, people traditionally "dance" to the music by swaying back and forth, often with interlocked arms. it can get kinda intense -- check it out.

here's a little more.

and what the hell, here's a different song from later in the day. note how everyone is singing along. it seems that germans simply love to sing together in public.

and finally, check out this super-schmaltzy song with accompanying interpretative dance. how can this be popular?

believe it or not, the song started prog-rocking out right after the video cut off!

Hey B & P,

You know how everyone always talks about the 'oompahpah' music and the swaying to it?
It is so gratifying to see that it is actually true!
So much fun and so amazing!

Why can't we have something like that over here?
Something that people of all ages can feel free to openly celebrate!
Thanks for all the pics. and music.
Your blogs are the best!
Love,
R

Hey B,

For some reason I can't get the first video to play. The others were great, the swaying dance is really funny. They look like a bunch of penguins on the annual Antartic march!

I wish you could have got some of the prog rock song on video, that would have been a nice capper to this entry.

hey sud, i'm not sure what the problem is with the first video -- it seems to be working fine for us, at least. and yes it's a damn shame we didn't get any of the prog-rocking! i stopped the video of the schmaltz because i couldn't take it any more, but then i was so dumbfounded by the subsequent progging that i failed to record it. such a wasted opportunity....

Some of the songs remind me of 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game'. :)

Hi, this is Tom, Dave's friend I'm sitting here with Dave and my German flat mates.
I am informed that the 'Rhythmic' swaying is called schunkeln.
